P. N. Srivastava received his M. Sc. (First Class First) and D. Phil.
degrees from the University of Allahabad.
He has done his advanced research work in many universities and
research institutions of USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Italy and Japan.
He has also been awarded D.Sc. degree (honoris
causa) by universities of India and Japan.
He has been Visiting Professor in various universities of USA,
Germany and Japan.
He
had been elected to the Fellowship of almost all the major academies of
India including Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of
Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences.
Academies in U.K. and U.S.A. (Royal Society of Microscopical
Society, U. K., Linnaean Society of London and Member (by invitation) of
New York Academy of Science) too have elected him as Fellow.
He had also held the position of Vice-President of the National
Academy of Science and Indian National Science Academy.
He
had been President of the Biological Sciences, National Academy of
Sciences; President of the Section of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries of
the Indian Science Congress; President of the International Council of
Scientific Development, Heidelberg, Germany; President of the Society for
Scientific Values; President of the Indian Society of Developmental
Biology; Founder President of the Indian Society of Radiation Biology;
General President of the Indian Science Congress and Chairman of the
Advisory Council, Science Olympiad Foundation.
Among
the numerous awards that he received include Aryabhata Medal of the Indian
National Science Academy, Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and
Industries Award, J.C. Bose Award of the U.G.C., Atma Ram Award of the
Ministry of Human Resource Development and Goyal Foundation Award as well
as Institute of Oriental Philosophy, Japan, Gold
Medal, Japanese National Academy of Medical Sciences Medal, and
Award of Highest honour from Soka International University, Tokyo, Japan
and Sir Asutosh Mookerjee Gold Medal as well as Nehru Birth Centenary
Award for life-time achievement of the Indian Science Congress
Association.
He
had been the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
(1982-87) and Member of the Planning Commission, Government of India
(1987-90). He has been the
Chairman of the Post-Graduate Medical Institute, V. P. Chest Institute of
Delhi University since 2000.
He
played an active role in the formulation of the National Policy of
Education, 1986 and as a Member of the Planning Commission was
instrumental in introducing the Naovodaya Vidyalaya Scheme; Establishment
of the National Literacy Mission; and getting a 166 page national policy
document “India’s Population and Perspectives” prepared and
presented before the Parliamentary Committee chaired by the Prime
Minister.
He
had been invited as “guest of honour at the 51st Meeting of
Nobel Prize Winners in Lindau”, 2001.
He had been responsible for getting an Indian team of twenty young
scientists participate in the above meeting as well as in future meetings.
This would give a unique opportunity to the young scientists to interact
