Brief Biographical Sketch
Dr H Nandakumar Sarma got his
M Sc degree of Physics from Banaras Hindu University in the year
1968. As a CSIR fellow, he did research on Mossbauer effect at
BHU. After that he went to the Blackett Laboratory of Physics of
the Royal College of Science in Imperial College of Science and
Technology, University of London.
He did research on pion-nucleon
scattering experiments using the atom smashing machine-7GeV
proton synchrotron at the Rutherford Laboratory, Oxfordshire.
Besides, he did experiments on thermal and ultra cold neutron
scattering experiments at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy
Agency (UKAE) Harwell. He has wide interest in sculpture and
painting of the renaissance period. Professor Sarma Visited places like
Venice, Florence, Rome, Pisa, Switzerland and Paris. He has
witten more than two hundred popular science
article in Manipuri and English.
He joined J N University of
Centre of P G Studies, Imphal which is now Manipur University
as Fellow Associate Professor on 8th February 1977. He is
the founder Head of Physics Department, Computer Centre
and Computer Science Department of Manipur University.
Professor Sarma initiated the post graduate teaching programmes
in physics. On his guidence experimental facility for
M Sc Physics was set up.
On the research front
his area of interest are superconductivity,
ferroelectric, ferrites, XRF, PIXE, thin films
and solar energy etc.
He has taken keen interest in
science and technology coverage in mass media and has been
actively involved in popularization of science to society.
He was the Co-ordinator for Sky Watch Programes, Like the
Transit Of Venus, which occured on the 8th of june 2004,
Solar Eclipse of 24th October 1995, 11th August 1999 and
22nd July 2009. Large number of students from Schools,
Colleges and Public were gathered at the Department for the
rare events. Two Newtonian Telescope (6" and 8")
were utilized for the purpose. He was the editor of the
Bulletin of the Manipur Science Association.
When he was Dean School of Science of Manipur University.
He took initiative for the organization of Manipur
Science Congress under the Sponsorship of the DST
Government of Manipur,and DST Government of India.
Professor Sarma is a
DST (GOI) nominated member of Sofisticated Instrumentation facility (XRF/XRD),
Gawhati University. He is also life time member of
Indian Physics Association, Indian Institute of Public
Administration and Indian Society of Analytical Scientist.
Professor Sarma has
attendend many international and national conferences.
lately attended the one day conference on "Thin Film Solar
Photovoltaics" on 16th Sept. 2009 at the Institute of Physics,
London, He presented paper on 'Ion Beam Analysis" on the 19th
International Conference on Ion Beam Analysis
held at University of Cambridge, United Kingdom from
7th-11th September 2009.
