OTHER INFORMATION:

(a)   International recognitions:

The astrophysics team led by Prof. Yugindro has achieved landmark feat by becoming the first team from India to discover one Ultra-luminous source candidate (ULX) and seven X-ray binaries simultaneously in the NGC 3384 galaxy and also for becoming the first team not only from India but also from the entire Asian continent to participate successfully in the international ‘Orion Project’ headquarted at Phoenix, Arizona, USA.  What follows are brief descriptions of the two remarkable achievements:

1.       One ULX and seven X-ray binaries in NGC 3384 are discovered

In a major breakthrough, two members of the astrophysics team of Manipur namely, Prof. K. Yugindro Singh of Physics Department, Manipur University, India and his former Ph.D. student Dr. A. Senorita Devi of Physics Department, Assam University, India have discovered an Ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) in the previously unstudied galaxy NGC 3384 by using the Chandra observational data provided by Chandra X-ray Center (CXC), NASA, USA.   An ULX emits more radiation in the X-rays than do a million suns at all wavelengths.  This newly found object which has been named as ULX  (X-8) has luminosity ∼1.52 × 1039 ergs s−1 in the 0.3–10.0 keV energy band and a bolometric luminosity ∼2.43 × 1039 ergs s−1. The ULX is spectrally hard in X-rays, with powerlaw photon index, Γ ∼ 1.97 when fitted with an absorbed power law. The spectral property of this object, when fitted with an absorbed disk blackbody, appears to be consistent with nearly a 30M? black hole accreting at ∼0.58 times its Eddington luminosity. The light curve of this ULX source has shown no signature of short-term variability in kilo-seconds time scales. Apart from the ULX (X-8), seven new X-ray binaries of NGC 3384 are also discovered during the investigation.

On May 5 last, a report regarding the discovery of ULX (X-8) and the seven X-ray binaries was submitted to Astrophysics and Space Science, Springer, Dordrecht, Netherland. After its confirmation, the report was published in its online journal with DOI 10.1007/s10509-014-2091-8 on September 6, 2014.

2.       MU Observatory has become world class

Since January 2012, MU observatory has been participating, as the lone member from India, in the International “Orion Project”, headquartered at Phoenix, Arizona, USA for photometric and spectroscopic observation of five variable stars of the Orion constellation namely, Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis), Rigel (beta Orionis), Mintaka (delta Orionis), Alnilam (epsilon Orionis) and Alnitak (zeta Orionis). As on September 2, 2014, eighteen observatories across the globe (12 from USA, 1 from India, 1 from UK, 1 from France, 1 from New Zealand, 1 from Austria, 1 from Germany) are taking part in the Orion Project. The photometric data obtained from MU Observatory were presented in the 33rd Symposium on Telescope Science, held at Ontario, California, USA during June 12-14, 2014 and they are incorporated in a research paper published by the renowned astronomer Jeffrey Hopkins of Hopkins Phoenix Observatory, Arizona, and USA.
