Brief Bio-Sketch
Yumkhaibam Rajesh Singh was born in a small village of Kakwa known as Kakwa Lilando Lampak, Imphal East, Manipur. He was brought up under the loving arm of Shri. Yumkhaibam Ibotomba and Shrimati Tombi.
He did his schooling from Catholic School, Canchipur. He left Manipur to pursue higher education. He completed his B Sc degree from Fergusson College, Pune with first class distinction and M Sc degree with first class distinction, Gold Medallist from Department of Geology, Savitribai Phule Pune University.
He completed PhD in the year 2010 with the fellowship of UGC-CSIR NET JRF/SRF from Department of Geology, Centre of advanced studies, University of Delhi on the topic “Geochemistry and Petrogenesis of Bayana mafic magmatic rocks, North Delhi fold Belt, Rajasthan”. He was supervised by the eminent Earth Scientist, Prof. Talat Ahmad, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi and present Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir.
Just after his Ph D, he got selected as Engineering Geologist at LNJ Bhilwara Group, Indo Canadian Consultancy Services Ltd. (Hydropower Company) Delhi-NCR Noida, Sector-1 and was working from 2010 to 2012. He was looking after different projects at Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Moreover, detail Project Report writing, geological field works for mapping, drilling and logging, identification of project site has been carried out during his stay at LNJ Bhilwara Group, Indo Canadian Consultancy Services Ltd.
He was selected as Research Scientist at National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa under the project “Hydrothermal Mineralization Studies” of Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi. The project especially deals with the study of seafloor hydrothermal systems along mid-ocean ridges with special emphasis on the survey and exploration for hydrothermal sulphide deposits in the Central Indian Ridge (CIR) and Southwest Indian Ridges (SWIR) located at the centre of the Indian Ocean i.e. around 230 South (latitude) and 700 East (longitude). This integrated project deals with basic scientific research to enhance our understanding of the hydrothermal systems in mid-ocean spreading ridge areas, identification of locales of hydrothermal sulphide mineralization/deposition in the CIR and SWIR areas, including determination of the resource potential for future mining. Polymetallic sulphides (PMS) deposits located along mid-oceanic ridge are known for their high content of economic metals like iron, copper, zinc, lead, silver, gold and also platinum groups of metals. With rapid industrialization of countries and with fast depleting land based resources, PMS located along the Mid-Oceanic Ridge provides an alternate for our future generation. This has resulted in many nations interest for exploration and exploitation of this PMS. India also submitted its application to grant licenses for prospecting and exploration of PMS along part of CIR and SWIR to International Seabed Authority. As a member of the prospecting and exploration scientific team, he has contributed significantly to achieve the target of the project during the scientific expedition in the Ocean Research Vessel (ORV) of Indian Sagar Kanya and Russian ORV Academik Nicolaj Strakhov. Huge volume of work has been carried out till now including fields’ i.e. scientific expedition; laboratory and report submission to Ministry of Earth Sciences and to International Seabed Authority, an intergovernmental body based in Kingston, Jamaica regulates and controls all mineral-related activities in the international seabed areas.
In the year 2015 he got selected as Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University. He left the research work at NCPOR on 23rd Sept 2015 and join Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University. Since then he is teaching Geochemistry, Igneous petrology, Economic Geology and Marine Geology to the M Sc students of Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University.
During the course of his education he qualified the Maharashtra State Eligibility Test (SET) for Lectureship held in August, 2002 in the subject EARTH ATMOSPHERIC OCEAN AND PLANETARY SCIENCE, conducted by University of Pune as the state agency.
Moreover, he also qualified the Joint CSIR-UGC Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and eligibility for Lectureship-National Eligibility Test (NET) held on 28-12-2003, in the subject EARTH ATMOSPHERIC OCEAN AND PLANETARY SCIENCE and he also got nominated for Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (SPM) Fellowship Test, 2004, as he have been one of the JRF (NET) awardees who has been placed among the top 20% awardees in the subject EARTH ATMOSPHERIC OCEAN AND PLANETARY SCIENCE.
Not the least he also qualified Geologists’ written examination (GSI) conducted by UPSC in the year 2005.
University of Pune has awarded him “The Prof.K.B.Powar Geology Paritoshik”, “The Prof K.V.Kelkar Prize in geology” and “The W.B. Metre Prize for Geology” for securing highest mark (Gold Medalist) in M.Sc., Geology held in May 2002.
He was in the organising committee for international workshop on Polymetallic Nodules Resources Classification organized by Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt of India, International Seabed Authority, Kingston, Jamaica and National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research, Goa held on 13-17 October 2014 at Goa, India.
He has also done numbers of geological field work in different part of the country for different geological studies namely J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Goa, Central India, Andhra Pradesh and also at Indian ocean in and around Rodrigues triple junction.
During the building up of his career he was also involved in extra curriculum activities like sports, adventure etc. He is an active player of Table Tennis, Badminton, Football and body building. On 9th Feb 2014 he participated in Goa International Marathon. In short he remains as an active person.
