Manipur University, 15th February 2025: The Department of Forestry, Manipur University, organized the Campus Bird Count (CBC) as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), India, on 15th February 2025, from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The event was coordinated by Dr. Vivek Vaishnav, Head (i/c), Department of Forestry, and Dr. Khwairakpam Romesh Singh, Guest Faculty, Department of Forestry, Manipur University.
The event was graced by Shri Debasis Chaudhari, Assistant Commissioner (GST), Manipur, and a passionate bird enthusiast, who joined as an expert. A total of 50 participants, including students, research scholars, and faculty members, took part in the event.
Dr. Khwairakpam Romesh Singh delivered an orientation lecture on birdwatching, after which participants conducted a systematic bird survey of the university campus. The survey was carried out in four teams under the guidance of faculty members Dr. Salam Dilip, Dr. Robert Panmei, and Dr. L. Romeechand.
Birds Observed: A total of 24 bird species were recorded, including commonly sighted species such as: Red-vented Bulbul, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Spotted Dove, Common Myna, Barn Swallow, White-breasted Waterhen, Oriental Magpie Robin, among others.

The event provided valuable insights into avian diversity, habitat ecology, and conservation awareness. Participants also had an engaging discussion with Shri Debasis Chaudhari over light refreshments. The programme significantly enriched students’ practical knowledge and field experience, fostering a deeper understanding of ornithology and biodiversity on the Manipur University campus.
