Manipur University, 14-8-2024: The Committee on Observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day 2024 at Manipur University organized a solemn event on August 14, 2024, at 11 A.M. at the Manipur University Central Museum. The event aimed to honor and remember the immense suffering and pain endured by millions during the India-Pakistan partition of 1947.
The program was graced by Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University, as the Chief Guest; Prof. Th. Purnima Devi, Dean of Social Sciences, Manipur University, as the Guest of Honour; Shri Laishram Jatra Singh, a prominent senior citizen, as the Special Guest; and Dr. Chungmeijai Mathew MK, Head of the Department of History, Manipur University, and Convenor of the Committee on Observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day 2024, as the President of the function. The event was attended by esteemed guests, faculty members, research scholars, and nearly 200 university students.
The inaugural ceremony began with a patriotic song, setting the tone for the day's events. The Special Guest, Shri Laishram Jatra Singh, inaugurated an exhibition featuring 52 posters that vividly depicted the tragedy and agony of the partition. As part of the observance, a play titled 'Emagidamak,' based on the partition of India and directed by the eminent film producer Ksh. Tejkeshore, was performed by Manipur University students.
In his address, Special Guest Jatra Singh shed light on the historical events that led to the partition, which caused the largest migration in history, widespread violence, and the suffering of millions. Guest of Honour, Prof. Th. Purnima Devi, emphasized the pivotal role of education in preventing such tragedies in the future and called for the unification of people from diverse backgrounds to uphold the lessons of history.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh highlighted the importance of observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. He urged everyone to avoid violence and actions that harm humanity and to work towards creating an atmosphere of unity and social harmony. He also shared stories of partition survivors, emphasizing the need to strive for a peaceful and harmonious future.
Dr. Chungmeijai Mathew MK, the Functional President and Convenor of the observation committee, paid homage to the millions who lost their lives and the survivors of the tragic event. He urged a commitment to building a future characterized by unity and harmony, emphasizing the profound lessons of history that guide us toward a more peaceful world.
The program concluded with the singing of the National Anthem, "Jana Gana Mana," by all participants, symbolizing a collective tribute to the nation.
