Manipur University, February 5, 2025 – The Examination Section of Manipur University (MU), in collaboration with the UGC-Malaviya Mission Teachers Training Centre, MU, organized a three-day workshop on “Assessment, Evaluation, and Question Setting” from February 5 to February 7, 2025.

The workshop aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of assessment, evaluation, and question setting in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). It also sought to identify challenges in implementing various aspects of the new education policy, such as integrating interdisciplinary approaches into curriculum design. Additionally, the workshop focused on enhancing knowledge of NEP 2020 mechanisms, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and imparting a deeper understanding of the new educational framework.

Key Discussions and Highlights

Chief Guest’s Address
Speaking as the Chief Guest, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University, emphasized that the workshop provides an important platform for faculty members from various colleges across Manipur to interact and exchange ideas. He highlighted the significance of conducting workshops and training sessions on assessment, evaluation, and question setting in the evolving academic landscape.

He also underscored the dynamics of NEP 2020, including: Flexible curriculum that promotes interdisciplinary learning, Empowering students with opportunities for fieldwork and skill enhancement, Digitization of the grading system for improved efficiency

Additionally, he discussed the challenges of NEP 2020 and proposed strategies to address them, reaffirming the university’s commitment to ensuring effective teaching-learning processes, student evaluation, and assessment methodologies. He also commended the Controller of Examinations (COE) and team for their dedicated efforts in implementing these initiatives.

Guest of Honour’s Address
Delivering his remarks as a Guest of Honour, Prof. Jibon Kumar, Chairman, Postgraduate Examination Standing Committee, and Dean, School of Human & Environmental Sciences, MU, stressed that assessment, evaluation, and question setting should focus on students’ capabilities and knowledge levels rather than the teachers’ perspectives. He emphasized the importance of clarity in question framing and uniformity in marking, urging subject experts to design student-centric questions that align with their academic and professional growth.

Another Guest of Honour, Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam, Chairman, Postgraduate Examination Standing Committee, and Dean, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, MU, highlighted the role of educators in student assessment. She encouraged faculty members to test students’ creativity through application-based questions. Addressing the impact of AI-driven education, she emphasized the need for teachers to be proficient in technology, as this enhances efficiency in evaluation and assessment. She also expressed appreciation for the COE and team for their efforts in streamlining examinations and result management.

Presidential Address
Presiding over the function, RK Bhubon Singh, Director, UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre, MU, stated that this workshop is the first of its kind at MU, aligning with NEP 2020. He reiterated that the workshop aimed to tackle challenges in the policy’s implementation while fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills among participants.

Keynote Address
In his keynote address, Shri Tokpam Shantikumar Singh, Controller of Examinations, MU, stressed the importance of efficiency in assessment, evaluation, and question setting to ensure the success of NEP 2020 implementation.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Suchitra Wangkhem, Assistant Registrar (Examination), expressed her gratitude to the Chief Guest, Guests of Honour, resource persons, attendees, and participants for their presence and unwavering support in making the workshop a success.

The three-day workshop concluded on February 7, 2025, and was hailed as a resounding success. It fostered knowledge, skills, and innovation among the 100 participating faculty members from various affiliated colleges across 16 districts of Manipur.
