XRD (X-Ray Diffractometer)
An X-Ray Diffractometer is an important technique used for phase identification and determining crystal structures of the crystalline solids or films. Every crystalline substance gives a specific X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. In the case of composites or a mixture of substances, each component produces its pattern independently. Therefore, the X-ray diffraction pattern of a pure substance is like a fingerprint of the substance.
SEM ( Scanning Electron Microscope)
The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) – QUANTA 250, installed in the Physics Department, Manipur University (MU), is a very powerful and useful machine. It is a UGC funded Central facility installed in the year 2012. It has helped numerous research scholars, M.Sc. students and others, both from the state and outside the state and it will continue to do so. SEM uses powerful focused beams of electrons to provide high-resolution images. These images provide the following information: i) topography, ii) morphology, and iii) composition.
This information can then be used in a variety of research, industrial, and commercial applications. The one installed in the university is mainly used for the research purpose in the following fields: Materials science, Nanoscience, Biological sciences, Soil and rock sampling, Medical science, etc. It has a resolving power of approximately 200 nanometers. There are also other accessories installed along with the machine viz. Sputter coater, Carbon coater, EDAX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis).
In the field of research and industrial applications, there is an ever-increasing demand for quality controls in the microscopic realm. Rendering high-resolution imagery using a scanning electron microscope can provide insight into many fields, making SEMs an indispensable tool.
