About Department

The Department of Biotechnology was establish to give a new impetus to the development of Modern Biology and Biotechnology in Manipur, in view of the need for modern biological technology of the state.

The emergence of Biotechnology is fast becoming an integral part of modern biological science. Biotechnology, being the technological applications that use biological system for our specific benefits, has tremendous potential to address problems related to agriculture, food science, environment and health care. In 2006, The Ministry of Human Resource Development approved for the establishment of the Department of Biotechnology in the Manipur University.

The First Session of 5-Year Integrated M Sc Biotechnology Programme stated in 2009.

 

Research Area 

Currently the Department focuses research works on cancer metastasis, roles in tumour cells-host cells interaction in cancer progression, genomic analysis of viral RNA/DNA and DNA profiling & cell culture of Medicinal and aromatic plants, In near future our research focus will be extended to microbial biotechnology and stem cell as well. The department has well established Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Tissue Culture, Microbiology and Molecular Biology laboratories.
