Keeping in view of the large number of students of geography at various colleges in Manipur, the subject - Geography was introduced at the post-graduate and research levels in the Manipur University in 1984.
Since then, the University has been offering M.A./M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in the Manipur University. Initially, Geography was together with Geology in the Department of Earth Sciences upto 1992, after which the University constituted a full-fledged department and which subsequently, moved to its present building (formerly of CEDTI) located between the Physics Department and Manipur University Library(photo enclosed).
At present four teachers including a Re-employed professor and a Visiting professor and two non-teaching staffs are in the Department. The intake capacity of M.A./M.Sc. Previous geography is 25 (twenty five) being admitted to the course from both arts and science streams. The Department is teaching papers covering - physical and human geography branches along with the practicals for the total marks of 1200. The papers offered are Geomorphology and hydrology, Climatology, Geographical Thought, Resource Geography, Population and Settlement Geography, Geography of India, Regional Planning, Remote Sensing, etc.
The Department has scope to strengthen the remote sensing and GIS lab. and computer networking facilities(three photos enclosed showing the facilities of digital image processing system, mirror stereoscope for aerial photo analysis and computer networking under the FIST-DST programme). Besides the theory and practical classes, students are also taken to the field for observations and surveys to write reports.
